Tour of Element, Huntington Beach, CA

and

Presentation by Jonathan Buck - ATA Engineering
Topic: Analytical tools and techniques developed to reduce the physical testing costs associated with developing new material systems.

TOUR

Element Huntington Beach is part of a global network of Element laboratories and experts specializing in materials testing, product qualification testing and failure analysis.

The Huntington Beach facility has been providing materials testing and consulting for Element clients worldwide since 1982. With over 100 multidisciplinary staff and state-of-theart laboratories, this facility supports a diverse range of quality requirements, from routine high-volume testing to complex materials analysis and failure investigations.

The facility's nadcap-accredited testing capabilities supply the foundation for quality control and product improvement for many industries along the West coast, including aerospace, military, nuclear, and medical manufacturing.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

As fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite materials progress and evolve, there is continued pressure to use novel material systems that hold the promise of greater performance (e.g., strength, fracture toughness) with less mass. These properties allow for augmented mission capabilities and reduced cost, to name just two benefits. However, this zeal for greater material performance is tempered by the reality that the introduction of new composite materials is a slow and expensive process. Dependable material property data must be gathered, and it takes a rigorous, comprehensive testing program to fully characterize the properties—first at the ply level, then at thee laminate level, and finally at the product or component level. The ability to reliably predict laminate material properties using ply-level material property data early on, and an understanding of the accuracy of those predictions, can drastically shorten the design cycle. This talk will highlight analytical tools and techniques developed at ATA Engineering to reduce the physical testing costs associated with developing new material systems. This technology has been implemented in an Abaqus add-on software package for direct use within an existing finite element modeling environment..

BIO

Jonathan is a project engineer at ATA Engineering. His work involves using applied engineering methods to solve a wide range of structural dynamics challenges to provide innovative test- and analysis-driven design solutions. Particular technical interests include spacecraft design and analysis, composite materials, optimization, and probabilistic methods for data analysis. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he researched the dynamic behavior of heterogeneous materials.
