Emerging Technologies in Composite Materials
Dr. Abdel Abusafieh, Cytec Engineering Materials
TOPIC:
The growth in the aerospace market has exploded in recent years. With the success of Boeing’s 787, the push for new material developments is being largely driven by the commercial aircraft sector. This growth has led to a new and larger demand for composite materials. To meet these material demands, novel multifunctional materials are required. The multifunctional composites will come from enhancements to existing low cost processing techniques such as RTM, VaRTM and rapid thermoplastic processing. These solutions will not only come from new processing techniques but also from new fields of material science, such as Nanotechnology. This talk will focus these emerging technologies and the drivers which led to this new exciting period in the history of composite materials.
SPEAKER:
Dr. Abusafieh is currently a Product Development Manager at Cytec Engineered Materials (CEM) in Anaheim, California. His group’s primary responsibility is to develop and engineer new products and processes for aircraft structural components using CEM’s resin systems and perform reinforcements (Unidirectional, woven, braided, and NCF’s). Prior to joining CEM, Dr. Abusafieh worked at ATK Space Systems in San Diego, California, as a Senior Staff Scientist leading the development of advanced composite technologies for space-based telescope mirrors and optical benches, satellite reflectors, solar panels, high- temperature radomes, and electronics enclosures. Before ATK, Dr. Abusafieh was a Research Assistant Professor at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering. Dr. Abusafieh holds two patents and has published over 30 publications in leading scientific journals and conference proceedings. He has given several invited talks and seminars on composites in aerospace applications.
