Modeling of Large Scale Reinforced Polymer Additive Manufacturing
Presented by
Dr. Mohamad Reza (Farid) Talagani
AlphaStar Corporation Long Beach, CA
ABSTRACT
Distortion and buildup of residual stresses are common design problems in structures manufactured using polymer extrusion techniques, popularly known as 3D printing. Instead of improving the quality of prints via trial and error, we demonstrate simulation tools that can be used to optimize the manufacturing process prior to physical material deposition. Predictive tools are particularly important for large scale printers and structures due to the significant material expense. Computational tools providing a fully coupled thermo-mechanical solution of polymer additive manufacturing with reinforced plastics are presented along with comparison to physical observations.
