The Development of Graphite Structures Fabrication Technology:
Problems and Solutions Then & Now;

It’s Not All Pitch and PAN: The Current Status of Rayon-based Graphite Fiber

The technology for designing and fabricating graphite composite structures and hardware is pretty well taken for granted today. Many small technology advances have made this possible. We will review these critical developments.

The second half of our presentation reviews the current status of rayon based fiber as produced in Belarus. The graphite fiber industry started with batch production of fiber from a cellulose type precursor (rayon).With the development and continuous improvement of Pan and Pitch based graphite, rayon based fiber has largely been ignored. It does however, still has a position in the marketplace and is being produced and sold.

Speakers:

Dr. James Leslie, COB,
ACPT Inc. Huntington Beach, CA

Carmen T. Leslie, President,
Daniels Fibers Inc., Fountain Valley, CA

ACPT is internationally recognized for its excellence in developing and manufacturing advanced composite structures and hardware. ACPT has pioneered in the transfer of aerospace design and manufacturing technology to commercial applications and has successfully developed composite drill pipe for “short radius” drilling operations and is currently developing composite drill pipe for deep water and extended reach operations.

Jim Leslie has published more than 30 papers and has spoken extensively on the subject of Advanced Composites and is internationally recognized for his knowledge and experience in this area. Jim has been very active in both SAMPE and The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). He has completed 2 terms on the Board of Directors of SME and has also served two terms as an advisor to the Composites Manufacturing Association of SME. Jim has been honored by SME through the awarding of the level of Fellow Member and the Jud Hall Award. The latter is awarded annually to an individual in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of manufacturing with composite materials. He has been recognized as an “Outstanding Engineering Alumni” by Penn State University. PSU honors one graduate from each College of Engineering each year. Dr. Leslie received this award from the College of Chemical Engineering this year, 2007. Has been elected level of Fellow Member in SAMPE, 2008.
