Intellectual Property: Understanding & Creating a
Business's Assets and Protecting Them

Vincent Bailey, Attorney & Director, Pacific Fiber Reinforcements

TOPIC:

A business is easily valued by its assets: cash, accounts receivable, buildings, land, equipment, inventory. However, an important asset in figuring a business’s worth are its “intangible” assets. Besides the business’s “goodwill”, for instance its customer base, its reputation in its industry, etc., a company’s Intellectual Property (IP) can be key in valuing a business’s worth or value.

Each of the generally recognized Intellectual Property rights including patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets will be reviewed with an eye toward the business’s operations. What each right protects and how to achieve the highest level of that asset’s recognition and the legal protection for each IP area will be discussed. The influence of the internet on these IP rights will be highlighted. Some examples of patents and trademarks operating in the advanced materials field will be presented.
